Pupils from a Cheshire school improved their cycling skills
More than 50 pupils from a Cheshire school improved their cycling skills with on road courses run by Cycle Experience, part of the TTC Group road safety education organisation.
The 12 to 15-year-olds from Upton-by-Chester High School went on 12 courses funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council as an “essential” follow up to Level 2 cycle training during their final year at primary school.
The students were all “highly enthusiastic and capable,” said Cycle Experience’s Regional Manager Steve Kyriacou, whose instructors delivered the Level 3 Bikeability course programme.
“All the students were a joy to teach displaying excellent cycling skills and achieving all Level 3 outcomes. They were a credit to the school.”
The school’s admin assistant Martin Boothman said all students had benefited greatly from the course and praised Cycle Experience instructors for their “exemplary” professionalism.
Bikeability Level 3 enhances the basic skills and educates cyclists to make journeys in a variety of more complex traffic conditions competently, confidently and consistently. Those completing Level 3 will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip safely to and from school, work or leisure on busy roads, using complex junctions and road features. The training deals with hazard perception, making ‘on-the-move’ risk assessments and planning routes for safer cycling.
Aims of this Level 3 cycle training course were:
- To encourage and develop safe cycling skills, including full appreciation of wearing appropriate protective equipment
- To develop positive attitudes towards road use
- To increase knowledge and understanding of the road and traffic environment
- To give trainees the confidence to use their cycles on longer, more complex journeys
Cycle Experience delivers Bikeability cycle training for primary and secondary schools across the Cheshire West and Chester borough as well as cycle training for adults and a range of other cycling promotion programmes on behalf of the borough council.
